S.A junior surfing champs

OMG! What an event!The biggest junior surfing event in the country. Very tricky surf ranging from 1ft to 6ft offshore and onshore trust East London to give the kids such challenging surf. The kids were amazing and were well up for the challenge and did exceptionally well in the difficult surf the standard of the surfing was at an all time high and my kids did me very proud in my absence. The next generation of surfers emerging from these great events are amazing finally South Africa in getting some depth in its junior surfing.

Once again my under 12 boys did an amazing job and made me so proud, all four of the finalist I coach on a regular basis. These guys are going to be competing with each other for many years to come and are going to be pushing the limits watch these guys closely in the future. In a very tightly contest heat, only 1 point separating top three positions it was young Matt McGillavray that took the honours. Congratulation's to the four boys for an outstanding performance, the results were as follows:

1st Matt McGillavray
2nd Jordan Maree
3rd Steff Burrows
4th Adin Masencamp

Adin Masencamp is only just turned 10 and is turning heads, the young kids is surfing superbly and is so focused and determined. He still has two more years in u/12 so i believe there are some titles coming his was soon.

As well as finishing 2nd Jordan Maree only 11yrs old, was nominated surfer of the contest, a great achievement at such a young age. Its great that his superb surfing is been recognised and appreciated

Equal 5th place went to little ripper Donavan Wichman who has improved leaps and bounds this year and is currently ripping hard and therefore worth of a mention, well done kido.

In the u/14
Diran Zakarian walked away with the finals with a massive 17.75 heat total clearly the winner of the division. hats how you win a contest surf so well that you can be denied a win, well done bru!

Young natural born ripper Benji Brand was living up to his reputation and surfing solid throughout the event, he was the man to beat. He finished 3rd overall although his surfing ability totally warrants a title.

In the u/16 division
David Van Zyle took the win over Mikey February congratulations boys.Reubin Lammers,the dark hoarse, finished 4th overall an awesome result for you my friend. Equal 5th went to Vincent Withers, he has come along way this year and backed up his improvement with some solid results this year. Well done boys you did Southern Cape proud. The ever consistent Daniel Wilson finished 5th with Vincent, the kid is an exceptional surfer, I am really looking forward to watching his progress in 2010

U/16 girls
As usual it was a Sarah Baum vs Bianca Buitendag clash. This time Bianca came out tops and took the win over Sarah, you two girls are exceptional surfers and both have a bright future in surfing keep it up girls and continue pushing each other and girls surfing in South Africa.
Amy Bosworth and Roxy Giles made it to the quarter finals well done more preparation equals stronger results. Never give up.

The main manne U/18 division
Matt Bromley was on form from heat one, in the final he left it to the last 6min to catch his two scoring rides and take out the win. A great example of total focus and a never give up attitude. The results have not gone his way this year as he has been focusing on Matric so to end off the year been S.A u/18 champ is a well deserved result, stoked for you brother.
Berrick De Vries was hot on his heals and finished 2nd overall, what a great year Berrick has had. He has really impressed me and has made it clear that he is going to be serious title contender in the years to come.

Victoria Bay Billabong Junior

The contest was scheduled to run at Vic bay which it did on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday unfortunately the surf dropped and the contest had to be finished off in Herolds bay. A few people made the most of the cooking waves at Vic such as Jordan Maree, Casey Grant, Bianca Buitendag and goofy foot power house Benji Brand

Wow I could not believe my eyes when i looked at the u/12 results I was so proud to see 6 of the 8 semi finalists, that i coach on a regular basis, in there giving it a go. In the final, 3 of the 4 kids were representing Waves S'Cool' of surfing. Big shout out must going to the following rippers for putting in so much effort this year and achieving great things with their surfing:

Donavan Wichman
Steff Burrows

Matt, Steff and Jordan all made it to the finals and finished 4th, 3rd and 1st respectively. By winning the contest Jordan also went on to win the series, congratulations young man you deserve it. You have all made me very proud and well done on a sterling performance.
Each and every single one of them showing that South Africa's next generation will be a threat on the world surfing scene and that finely South Africa is gaining some depth in its surfing.

In the U/14 division it was clear that Benji Brand was the man to beat, Steff Burrows competing in an older age group managed a semi final and an =7th place. Benji Brand used his back hand to his advantage and tore the living day lights out of a fun Vic Bay and was comboing his fellow competitors on the way to the final. He backed up his solid performance on the rights and surfed excellently on the lefts at Herold bay and won the event hands down, congrats you little ripper.

Other stand outs in the U/14 were Dyllan Lightfoot and Brandon Benjamin well done kids i am very happy for you.

In the U/16 final it was young J-Bay Ripper Steven Sawyer that took out the win over Dale Staples, Benji Brand and Jared Veldhuis. In a very low scoring final it was Steven that came out tops, Benji Brand was also in the mix in a division that he will only be joining in 2yrs time. Local kid Forrest Hair did exceptionally well by making the semi finals and finishing 7th overall.

In the Woman pro Junior it was a Bianca Buitendag affair from the beginning posting some of the highest heats cores in the event. When the contest moved to Herolds it would be to her favoure now that she is calling Herold home! Well done also to Sarah Baum who is also surfing excellently, keep it up girls.

Last but not least it was the main manne, the U/20 pro junior. Berrick de Vries was on fire from the beginning of the contest and has been on fire pretty much the whole year. In his first year in the division he has won almost every event he has competed in, good work bro keep it up. Hats off must go to Eastern Caper Bertie Stuurman who blazed a trail all the way to the semi finals and finished 3rd overall.

Waves school of surfing “news flash”

Well the fun just does not stop, 29th/30th I had a camp with 8 Kids in Still Bay the best thing was that we scored cooking 3f waves for two days totally uncrowded.

We stayed in the beautiful thatch roof houses at Bosbokduin located in a nature reserve. The weather was fine with off shore wind morning to night. The general feel of the camp was very positive and the cherry on the cake were the waves, I believe every one of them learnt some valuable lessons.

Davey Brand after winning the Quiksilver King of the Groms series has earned himself a spot in the King of the Groms Grand final in France from the 20th September to the 4th October. This is a momentous occasion for this young man and a great opportunity in his career to make a name for himself. After much consideration I decided that I will be accompanying Davey to the event.
If the contest finishes early I will be sure to get in touch and inform you of availability to coach and assist at Billabong Junior and S.A junior Championships.

The Freestyle Surfabout was held at Table View beach both days. The first saw nice clean 4ft conditions with a serious shore break on high tide with some of the competitors floating the section and landing on dry sand. The second day started with light NW wind that picked up through the day with the finals being held in strong side shore wind.

The U/14 final was made up by some talented groms with Steffen Burrows taking the win with Jordy Maree 2nd, Dylan Wichmann 3rd and Ben Alheit 4th.

The Ladies was contested by the usual suspects, but it was Freestyle team rider Stacey Guy (Melkbos) who came out tops with Penny Stemmet (Strand) close 2nd, Tanika Hoffman was 3rd and Chantelle Reutenbach (Melkbos) 4th.Tanika has been showing some real focus a dedication in our coaching sessions and its great to see her reap the rewards.

In the U/18 final it was almost an all West Coast/Melkbos affair except for Michael February (Kommetjie) who took the win from Justin Torode (Melkbos), 3rd was Leon Du Preez (Melkbos) with Jeandre Blignault (Melkbos) 4th.

The Open men was an exciting heat between old and young. Ian Armstrong showed the youngsters how it’s done and took 1st place and a R6000 cheque, second was Dave Richards (R2500), 3rd went to Wes Grey (R1000) with the U/18 Jordan Alexander (R500) in 4th.

The Freestyle Surfabout was a great success with more than 85 entries in total and good waves.

Terrible news about the shark attack in Glentana, our condolences to the Van Zyl family off Mossel Bay, Gerhad you will be missed in the lineup. This is now a good time to raise awareness of shark attacks and how to treat them if you ever found yourself in that situation.
Four things you must do for a bite to the leg:
1. Call 082911
2. Indirect pressure (if the leg is bitten put direct pressure on the femoral artery, use force)
3. Torne quay (use a leash and wrap it around as many times as you can)
4. Direct pressure (use sand free towels and shirts and apply pressure to the wound site)

Davey Brand Pulls It Off

The surf forecast was spot on, big and onshore and without exaggerating it was 8ft plus and 40km an hour winds from the North East, it was going to be one of the toughest events these young men were going to take part in. Day two we woke up to an sweet offshore and cooking waves but like clockwork the onshore came busting through right on time and dashed anyone hopes of getting anymore barrels.

However that morning saw three epic barrels go down, Kacey Grant blowing up with two barrels on one wave scoring himself a 10 point ride. Right behind him on barrel skill was Slad Prestwhich finding a deep clean sick barrel, clearly these two guys from the same area surf some really good waves.

In these very testing conditions it the titles and contest wins would go to the person prepared to work the hardest, in these condition it was about getting the job done. Two waves, if you lucky, your first wave had to count with at least two turns on it and within the first 5 min. This would hopefully give you enough time to paddle back out and find another wave amongst all the chaos. That's only if you could get out at back line on your first jump in time for your heat.

In the premier Under 16 division, Brand went into the Southbroom leg of the Quiksilver King of the Groms as joint ratings leader with fellow Kommetjie local and close friend Michael February, and it literally came down to the wire with the first surfer being eliminated effectively losing the series title. And with a trip to France to contest the world finals of the Quiksilver King of the Groms up for grabs, as well as the overall honour of such a prestigious win, both surfers were focused and committed to the task at hand.

Once again Brand used his mechanical backhand attack to muster up the points, while Prestwich found a bank in the middle of the bay to snag two high scores, and with the heat slowly drawing to a close February found himself in third place and facing elimination. Realising that a loss would see his hopes of a repeat of his 2008 Quiksilver King of the Groms Series win, the defending champion stroked into a frothy wall just seconds before the siren signaling the end of the heat. February tried to pull into the barrel but the wave refused to co-operate, and even the close-out turn February executed wasn't enough to pull him through and save his title dreams. As February bowed out, Brand left the water with the 2009 Quiksilver King of the Groms series title and a ticket to France securely in his belt.

With the seeding the way they were it allowed for Kane Bennewith to claw his way through the opposite side of the draw to Brand to the final, hats must go off to this kids sterling performance.

With the minutes ticking past Bennewith took two smaller insiders and posted low scores to take the heat lead, while Brand sat and waited.Bennewith had just pulled out of a smaller inside wave and ended up getting caught by the rogue sets and dragged into the middle of the Southbroom Bay.
As Bennewith struggled against the surging current, Brand quickly made his way back to the lineup to await a second wave which he eventually picked off and again bashed relentlessly with his stylish backhand.

In the Under 20 division, 16 year old Beyrick de Vries from Umhlanga Rocks made it clear that his is a name to look out for in future years.

Sadly for Leppan faulty equipment was to see his title hopes dashed in a dramatic moment in the quarter-finals. With de Vries having advanced through the previous quarter-final heat, Leppan knew he had to get through his quarter-final against Casey Grant (Scottburgh), Matt Bromley (Kommetjie) and Davey van Zyl (Durban) to keep his title dreams alive. But tragedy struck about seven minutes into the heat when the Umhlanga surfer was steam-rolled by a three metre wall of water that snapped his leash and washed his surfboard to the shore. With another three huge waves behind it Leppan found himself floundering in the middle of the Southbroom bay at the mercy of the sea as the other three surfers in his heat continued to surf and build their heat scores.

In the final between Casey Grant and Berryick De Vries with the minutes ticking away de Vries turned and paddled into the smaller wave, and pulled two polished off-the-lips to post a 4.5 and push his lead further out of Grant's reach. With the ocean refusing to play ball, Grant took off on one last wave in an attempt to attain the points he needed to take the title, but the wave closed out on Grant along with his title hopes.

De Vries left the water victorious, collecting the R5,000 winner's cheque for today, a further R5,000 for his series win, and a return air ticket to surfing's most hallowed ground - Hawaii - for the 2009 winter season.

Camp Dates

Cape Town 27^th July- 2^nd August,

This is my bi-monthly trip to Cape Town; this year has picked up momentum with the Cape Town visits which has allowed me to work with the kids on a much more regular basis. This is great for them to have regular training and feedback on their improvement each time. There is a really young hot contingent coming out of Cape Town which is great to see.

I am now also introducing an added service to my Cape Town trips, all video footage will be captured and edited, with the footage I will produce a short DVD and coaching C.D which will be posted to each student.

Mossel Bay Camp 8^th-9th August:

This camp will be more “Boot Camp” style with all the bells and whistles, this is where I will give the kids a taste of what kind of commitment, dedication, and focus a professional surfer needs to put in to reap the rewards. Each student will leave the camp with a mini portfolio including photos and a short DVD which can be presented to your sponsor .This will also demonstrate how a person can present himself to a company when looking for sponsorship as well as getting used to being interviewed. We will be utilizing the wide variety of waves in the area including Diaz beach for training and heat drills and the Point for technical surfing. This camp will include accommodation, meals and coaching. The camp will be run in a very similar way as to the National team camp SSA held here, in preparation for the World Games in March.

Still Bay/Jongensfontein 29^th-30th August

This is my “family” camp, last year was such a great success I thought I would make it an annual event. This camp will have more of a family vibe to it where the parents, brothers and sisters are all welcome. The idea is spending quality time with each other whilst getting your kids profesional coaching in an area with great waves and breathe taking nature. We’ll surf till we drop and then at night retire to our homes or get together for a lekker braai. I want to incorporate fun into the camp and have the main focus on surfing and surfing good waves. This camp will be more like a rough it “camp”, we will be bringing the tents and sleeping bags and camping at Vic Bay camp site. This training weekend will be in preparation for the Billabong Vic Bay junior event, this will be the “fun” camp where all the friends come along we surf all day, under super vision, enjoy ourselves and familiarize ourselves with the wave.

Jeffery's Bay Camp

I could not have asked for a more successful camp, everything ran perfectly and what made it so amazing was the epic surf we were fortunate enough to get during the waiting period. This meant we had the pleasure of watching this years Billabong WCT live.

The camp ran the duration of the Occy Grom junior contest the 9th to the 15th of July. We had an amazing group of kids consisting of all ages from all over the country they were, Logan Eales and Jordan Alexander from Cape Town, Steff Burrows and Adin Masencamp, Charl de Waal and Rigard Smit from Strand, Licoln Logie from East London and Dylan Lightfoot from J-Bay.

The camps main focus was preparation for the Occy grom:

Day 1:The waves were super fun 2-3 foot at the point with a light NW wind. We had heats in the morning and after lunch we had a free surf at Magna tubes beach break and then video analysis that evening

Day 2: The contest ran in very difficult small North westerly conditions at Bone Yards,

Day 3: Day 2 of the contest ran in perfect offshore 2-3 foot point. The level of surfing was incredible and all the kids in all the age groups especially the u/12 stepped it up in the near perfect conditions. Stand outs at the event were Donavan Wichman who won the U/12 division having spent some time coaching with me in Mossel Bay in preperation of the event, Jordan Maree was ripping on his back hand, surfing smoothly with his polished and mature style. He was definitely looking like the man to beat and finished 2nd overall. Ethen Flether fulfilled his potential and ripped it up posting some big scores along the way. The depth and level surfing of the under 12 division had everyone on the beach, including Occy, totally blown away.

The U14 division produced a new winner in Daniel Buitendag from Victoria Bay who clinched his first Billabong Junior Series event title.

Mikey Feb was owning the point throughout the event, the wave suiting his unique style right down to the ground, he took the win over Steven Sawyer a new comer to the u/16 division showing he has got what it takes to win.

Day 4: The ocean went flat. I arranged with my good friend and big wave surfer Duncan Scott to have a jet ski/tow in, orientation day. The kids were introduced to the Jet ski and all the safety features needed to run such a craft. All of them had equal opportunity to get towed behind the ski at Kabeljouws beach break and bust some airs.

Day 5/6/7: The swell kicks in and the Billabong WCT starts. These three days would be all about surfing, watching the WCT and video analysis. Watching the pro's then watching yourself after being videoed and analysed then trying to apply what you have learnt in the surf under supervision.

The camps went down great with the fact that we had great surf for the junior contest we had heaps of fun on the jet ski and were lucky enough to have the contest run during the 7 days we were there. We also got see and surf J-bay the worlds most perfect right hander as good as it gets.

I would like to thank Hurley for sponsoring some prizes, "Ripper" of the camp went to Rigard Smit and "most improved" went to little power house Steff Burrows. Big congratulations to all the kids for putting in so much effort the reward were clearly visible in there surfing.

Quiksilver KOG Mossel Bay

Mossel bay had cooking surf all week leading up to the contest with medium swell, great tides and favourable winds allowing for some super warm up sessions before the contest.

Saturday 13th saw the annual Quiksilver king of the groms kick off in Mossel bay in cooking 2-3ft surf. The tides were neaps and the wind light which would therefor have little effect on the wave. The waves by the afternoon were cooking breaking right from ze back back.

Saturday evening I had a premier of my new short movie called Gromz Go Crazy 01 at the Waves surf shop. It was a great success and all the kids loved it, there is some amazing surfing and waves on the video so be sure to look out for it. I hope to have sequels to the movie, so any hot groms who want to feature be sure to get in touch.

Sunday 14th contestant and organisers woke up to a disappointing sight of flat wave at the Point. It was a last minute decision and with absolutely no other option of a venue the contest had to be moved to Herolds bay.Having not made prior arrangement to host the event at Herolds bay did cause some hassles with the local law enforcement, nothing like a little morning drama to start the day.

With that sorted the contest ran in super fun 3ft waves with plenty of ripping going on. Davey Brand won the U/16 final by opening up with a 7.25 busting a huge signature first turn on his first wave, Mickey and Davey were in fact in the last KOG finals in Kommetjie were Mickey got the upper hand. However this time round it was Davey who took the honours after dominating every heat, he walked away with the win convicingly.

Other Stand Outs in the U/16 was Daniel Wilson from Kommetjie, this result surely proving what this young mans surfing ability is cabable of finishing equal 3rd. Dark Hoarse Vincent Withers showed some local local knowledge by taking down some big names on his way to a semi final birth and an equal 3rd, pocketing himself some cash and proving hard work does pay off.

The U/20 final was amazing to watch, Brendon Gibbens continued his good form by winning the event in a hard contested final. Chris Lappan looked good from the beginning of the contest and was the man to beat. Both started off with some good scores but it was Chris who took it too the next level by busting out an air 360, Brendon saw this and stepped up to the plate and also busted a bigger and better air 360.

After all was said and done the event ran very well and as usual all parents and kids were stoked after a great weekend in Mossel Bay town of the year.

Next up is the O'neil Cold Water Classic in Cape Town a 4 star WQS followed by the Rip Curl Grom search also held in Cape Town, so be sure to watch this space.

Mr Price WP Open

Well Well Well, it's been a really busy two weeks since the S.A champs. The weekend before saw the Mr Price WP Open where my boys were really kicking up a storm. In almost near perfect Trestles look alike conditions at Long Beach, Kommetjie.

Shaun Joubert was the man to beat making both the u/20 and open final his arch rival Chad du Toit also qualified for both finals showing the older crew that the young guns are coming through fast and furious.

Despite sterling performances from both these surfers it was tall kid Matt Bromley with his new strategy that took the u/20 final convincingly with two strong rides, Mickey Feb was looking hot in the final when he scored a 9 on his first wave but was very unfortunate not to get a back up wave therefor finishing 2nd overall. Shaun Jobubert and Chad du Toit finished 3rd and 4th respectively.

In the open men's division, Gavin Roberts continued his show of form after having just won the S.A senior champs by finishing 4th overall. Shaun Joubert was very stoked to make both finals although slightly disappointed not having won one of the divisions in the near perfect surf, he was ripping throughout the event and managed a consistent 3rd. Brendon Gibbens finished 2nd overall continuing his string of good results this year, Chad du Toit redeemed his fourth place finish in the Juniors by taking out the open men's.

Mossel Bay Ripper Johann Kriek dominated his heats up until the final were he was unable to get a solid back up score which left him with a equal 5th overall, a great result, well done.

S.A Surfing Championships/National team trials

Last week saw the 44th inaugural S.A surfing champs held in St Mikes sponsored by South Coast Tourism. It was a highly contested event as usual with plenty of highs and lows, the surf was very demanding with consistent 4-6 foot waves. We were very fortunate to score cooking 4ft Southbroom before the event started this proving to be a positive start of some great surf for the week ahead.

Day 1 saw cooking 4-6 foot offshore waves peeling down the point and a new format, 1st place through to round 4 2nd and 3rd to round 3 and 4th into repo charge round 2.

Friday was a whole other ball game with solid 8 foot sets and a howling NE wind making for extreme conditions, after heats there were some great car park stories of how guys were getting dealt in the solid surf. Saturday and Sunday proved to be awesome conditions not dropping below the 5ft mark, great waves ment there was some world class surfing.

Stand outs in the men's division were DEVYN MATTHEYS, DAN REDMAN, MAMFRED ADRIO, and the man to beat RYAN PAYNE eventual surfer of the contest.

Gavin Roberts beat 2007 SA Champion Devyn Mattheys of Border into second place with Dan Redman of KZN grabbing third ahead of 2009 Surfer of the Contest Ryan Payne of EP.

Nobody could out class HEATHER CLARK in the open woman's division showing that the St Mikes local can still mix it up with the best surfers in the country. From the outset it was obvious that Heather was in it to win it.

Clark successfully defended the title she won at Victoria Bay last year after fighting her way through the repocharge round early in this year’s event. Nikita Robb of Border was second, Tammy Lee Smith of KZN came third and Faye Zoetmulder of EP was fourth.

Kyle Lane was definitely the man to beat in the u/20 boys division with some hard hitting back hand turns. Shaun Denis was also looking good throughout the event, Jaco Stey was a definite threat with a new found confidence showing in his attitude and surfing. Bertie Stuurman was on fine form and looking to take the title.

Shawn Dennis found form in the Under 20 Boys Final to beat fellow KZN surfer Kyle Lane into second place while 2009 Junior Surfer of the Year and Lotto Scholarship recipient Bertie Stuurman of EP came third. Underling KZN’s dominance in this division was Chris Leppan who was fourth.

In the Girls u/20 Sarah Baum was definitely onfire and looking very good on her backhand in the solid surf, she would have been the obvious bet although it was tough cookie Taryn Chudleigh that piped her at the end for the S.A champ title.Chudleigh’s board hit her in the face during her semi final and she had to be taken to hospital but she was back in time for her final and did Western Province proud.

During the S.A champs 9 surfers were selected to take part in in National team trials, surfing for one position. Three positions had been already given to top WQS campaigners, Brandon Jackson, Rudi Palmboom junior and Damien Farenfort. In the end it was clear tha Ryan Payne and Llewellyn Whittaker wanted to be in the team more than anyone.

In a round robin type trial over four heats Ryan and Lu had three 1st places but it was Ryan's 2nd place in his 4th heat that beat Lu's 3rd place. So after loads of heats it was Ryan Payne that would be part of the National team going to Costa Rica end of July, Llewellyn will be first reserve.

S.J WINS OAKLEY PRO JNR

Shaun Joubert makes his come back almost half way through the year and wins the Oakley pro junior in Port Alfred over the weekend. The kid was on fine form throughout the entire contest and was so stoked when the end of the heat came and he had won. Shaun has been very patient over the last few months, looking for a solid result. After the experience and the highest place finish at the world Games in Equador, equal 8th, it was just a matter of time till he won an event.

Brendon Gibbons finished a convincing second, Bendon was the man to beat at the event but fell short in the hard contested final. Its great to see the young man applying himself and his talent finally getting the results he deserves.

In almost perfect surf Shaun dominated the event and took down the best surfers in the country as well as some international talent. Friday saw Matt Bromley steal the lime light by surfing exceptionally well and turning heads scoring strong 7 point rides.

Other stand outs were mr consistent the angle grinder Davey Brand who made quarter finals and finished equal 5th with his good friend Jacob Mellish.

Davey, hot off a 3rd place finish at the World Games in Ecuador took down some big names utilising his strong back hand. Jacob Mellish after a slow start this year has come out the gates, firing on all four cylinders and surfed hard and fast throwing down some big turns to make it through some stiff heats and into the quarter finals.

Tanika Hoffman did exceptionally well making the most of the long right handers, the strong back hand Tanika turn assisting her to the semi final, finishing 3rd overall.

Mossel Bay Junior Camp

Hello Boys and Girls,

Last weekend on the 25th and 26th of April i had a mini grom surf camp the surf pumped. I had 5 parents enquire about training on this specific long weekend which made me think i should have a camp. It was small camp with only 5 people attending and a very young group with the youngest been 7 and the oldest 13.

The kids that attended the camp were as follows, Goofy foot ripper from Kalk Bay, Jordan Maree age 10, Strand wave slayer, Adin Mazemcamp age 9 and the eldest of them all Nahoon's style master, Licoln Logie age 13.

The other two that made up the five were the Elkington Brothers, Max age 7 and Jake age 9, both charging and showing ability way beyond their age in the great surf. As you might have noticed i mentioned that the waves were cooking.

Saturday inner pool was all time with a solid little ground swell and a pushing tide most the day, the boys really excelled in the rippable waves even on the high tide when things got a bit tricky and started breaking close to the rocks.

Sunday was disappointing at the Point, we woke up to small 2 foot waves with a devil wind, I made the call and went to one of our semi secret spots where we scored epic 3 foot grinding left handers. The kids absolutely loved the waves and the challenge, it was great to see them out there charging, enjoying themselves.

After scoring such great waves it was evident that this camp's focus was about learning to catch and ride good waves properly and at the same time working on their technique. All sessions were videoed and video analysis done in our Waves school of surfing class room.

Each and everyone of the kids i am sure learnt a valuable lesson whether it be about surfing or just about themselves. All in all a very successful camp.

Big shout out to the local boys for giving me space and freedom to use the Point as a training ground.

I though i would share the fantastic news if you have not hear already. The Southern Cape long boarding team did exceptionally well last week in Jeffery's Bay. The contest had great surf everyday against weather and swell forecast which made for great surfing and even better surfing.

Boland Trials

Boland were kind enough to open up their doors to the Southern Cape community and allowed us to surf their trials. Johan Kriek has been ripping and seems very determined, he has two trials and is confident he will be first seed for the Boland team. Last weekend saw the final of three trials held at Jongensfontein. The conditions were epic 3-4foot right handers peeling all day, neap tides and off shore wind made for rippable waves all day.

There was some really hot junior surfing with guys like Phillip Visagie, Andrew Smith and Tommie Kruger really impressing me in the small to medium perfect waves. U/16 surfer Rigartd Smit was also on fine form doing some big turns and impressing the judges. The final results are as follows.

This event was held in P.E where three of my student shone. Little charger Max Elkington got 1st in the U/8 division and his older brother Jake finished 2nd in the U/10 division.

Big shout out must go to little ripper Adin Mazemcamp who won the U/10 division convincingly, he was also nominated surfer of the event after a sterling performance through the contest consistently scoring 8,9 and 10 point rides in his heats.

Well done Adin your a little ripper keep it up looking forward to seeing more performances such as these in the future.

Billabong Pro Junior

After arriving home after a gruelling 2 day trip from Ecuador the team left Cape Town international to fly to Durban the very next day. A very hectic schedule for such young, up and coming stars.

The disappointing news was that non of their boards arrived as they were left in Amsterdam, this would prove to be a problem for those competing in the event the following day, although this is not never heard of and comes with the territory of being a professional surfer.

The conditions were very testing but contestable averaging 3 foot clean waves in the morning deteriorating throughout the day due to the onshore making for very shifty waves.

Competing in excellent offshore waves that grew from one metre to a board-breaking two metres during the day, Bianca Buitendag, 15, from Victoria Bay, beat SA junior teammate Kirsty Delport (Durban) by 12.75 points to 8.25 in a one-sided final with Delport. Well done Bianca you deserve it, I am very proud of you.

Other stars at the event in the U/20 division were Brendon Gibbens who finished 2nd and defiantly deserves a good result as he is a very hot talented surfer, my main man Matt Bromley finished 3rd and Jaco Steyn finished equal 5th showing that hard work and determination will get you results. Congrats Casey on the win, you have been impressing for some time and its finally payed off, keep it up.

U16 saw Mr consistent Davey Brand finish 3rd overall and dark hoarse Danile Wilson shinning by putting effort into his approach, finishing 5th overall. Congratulations to Davey Van Zyl for his win and Mikey Feb for 2nd.

Welcome back to Benji Barnd after an extended stay in Hawaii, clearly doing him the world of good. He put all his North shore winter knowledge to practise and walked away with a convincing win in the U/14 division

In the U/12 Shane Sykes took the win over goofy foot style master Jordan Maree, Well done to Jordy for and excellent result who also competed in the U/14 division where he finished 7th overall, Jordy Maree has only just turned ten and he showing talent beyond his years, congratulations young man.

Wish i could have been there to watch all these kids ripping it would have been very entertaining.

ISA world surfing games

Hi Guys and Gels,

I am sure you have all heard the final results and the achievements of the Junior team in Ecuador, I know the news is a bit late but this is what the news is from inside the camp.

We arrived early and quickly acclimatised to the weather, accommodation, waves and food. Having arrived early would help put us in a positive frame of mind knowing we had more time practising at the contest arena, it also allowed us to have our competition with New Zealand.

Every year S.A surf against NZ in a warm up event before the world games. This year for the first time in four years we beat them, we not only beat them we absolutely annihilated them. Shaun Joubert the only U/18 to make the final won the division, we got 1st and 2nd in the U/16 and 1st, 2nd, 3rd in the girls U/18 division. Team S.A went on to get a 1st and 2nd in the tag team which led to a convincing win over the All Blacks, they literally went home with their tail between their legs and we went home with spirits high.

It was a grueling 8 day event and every single team member would contribute in some shape or form to the end result. The waves at Le Farre were very consistent we only had one day where we battled for surf due to the high tide, during this time we took part in the tag team event where we placed 2nd in the semi final to secure us a spot in the tag team final to be held on the last day. Without Matt Bromley in the tag team we would never have made the final, in the semi final we tactically sent him to the point as our power surfer and he continued to blow up scoring a 9 and two 8 point rides.

It all went down to the wire, team S.A on the second last day was lying third and in contention for the title with five surfers still remaining in the event. Unfortunately it was not to be our day and we lost four kids going into the last day.

We finished 6th overall one better than last year although accumulating a lot more points as a team, we were proud to have a finalist in Davey Brand who finished a well deserved 3rd overall. We also received a silver medal in the tag team finals, a true testament of our sheer determination as a nation to never give up.

Stand outs for me were Shaun Jobert who placed highest out of the South Africans in the U/18 division who placed 8th overall, Bianca Buitendag finished a convincing 11th overall and was not finished kicking butt and only got knocked out due to some hard core hassling from the two Americans. Davey Brand did us really proud by finishing 3rd overall and was on fire the entire event, consistency proving to be the way to win and ISA world junior title.
Well done team we are all very proud of your effort.

Busy Days

Hi Boys and Girls, Ladies and Gentlemen

Its been a really hectic month with camps, contests, coaching , almost the Quiksilver Good Wave and some really good surf at home.

February 13th to 15th we had our first National junior team camp in Cape St Francis, we stayed at the Cape St Francis resort which was the ideal location for the team, only 5min walk from the beach. We had some great waves and the kids were all surfing well, by the end of the camp they had lifted the standard considerably. The camp ran very smoothly with the coaches and managers taking a different approach this year. This approach seemed to work well as the whole team bonded very well and there was a really positive vibe amongst the whole team.

We have had some really fun waves for the after school club which the kids have been enjoying. We have some good turn outs especially on the hot sunny days. This Thursday afternoon school club will be the place where I find the next Jordy Smith.

March 5th- 8th the SSA ran the second of the two camps here in Mossel bay and needless to say it was a great success. We stayed at the beautiful Park House lodge nestled in amongst the trees, a great place for the kids to come back too and just chill out. The waves at Diaz were pretty average although very contestable and if fact great waves in which to prepare. Once again the kids performed and lifted their game each day and by the end of the camp each and everyone of them was ripping.

March 9th-15th I was in Cape Town to catch up with some of my students. I am working on being in Cape Town coaching the kids there on a regular basis.I also had the pleasure to work with some of the Hurley team members. Monday and Tuesday was all time in Kommetjie with long beach cookinf 3-4 foot and offshore. I was also fortunate to see young Max and Jake Elkington rip it up on perfect 3 ft inner Kom, these boys are 7 and 9 respectively and full of potential.

At the weekend the Quiksilver K.O.G went down. The first day was held at Wit Sand in less than ideal conditions with strong onshore and building swell, it was therefore very important to be prepared for these sort of conditions so you could be fortunate enough to enjoy cooking long beach on day two of the event. Mikey February was on fine form and won the premier U/16, a good result before going to the world games. Hats off to Berrick De Fries who won the u/20 division, he was ripping throughout the contest and deserved to win the contest, this being only his first year in the division. My main man Davey Brand did exceptionally well and showed off his local knowledge by finishing 2nd over all.

This Sunday we are all off to Ecuador for the World Junior surfing Games all your good vibes and support would be much appreciated. Take care and all the best ViVa S.A

Quiksilver Goodwave

Hi Everyone,

Been just more than a month ago since you last heard from me. Things got very busy in the new year with the learn to surf and the junior kids that wanted training before going back to school.

However the last few weeks have been generally quite although there is a lot of preparation going on for the World Games.

Long time chommie, Kevin Olsen is in town, Ex slummies local is visiting from from France where he now resides. Its really great to catch up with friends over some good waves.

Waves wise its been pretty slow with the odd good day here are there. This is pretty unusual, if you check older blogs you might notice that each time i report back the surf has been cooking.

Been playing around with my water camera and have a couple shots to share with you, have a look and let me know what you think.

I have been saving the best news for last. I have recently been selected along with 31 other surfers from all around South Africa to take part in the Quiksilver good wave.

After winning it in 2003 and having been residing in the U.K for 6 years, Quiksilver have given me the opportunity to take part in one of the most prestigious events of the year.

Shaun Joubert, the Prince of Mossel Bay and up and coming ripper is also amongst the 32 select surfers chosen to take part.

The Good wave has a year long waiting period and has the biggest prize purse of any contest in South Africa, it will be held at the New Pier in Durban. Check out www.goodwave.co.za to follow the status of the event.

HAPPY NEW YEAR.

Welcome back everyone, I trust you all had a very happy Christmas and new year.

The learn to surf school has been very busy and successful although i am now looking forward to getting stuck in with the Elite training again.

Hurley has come onto the scene in a big way this summer and they have assigned me as the freelance coach for their surfing team.

Photog Richard Hamlock from Durban was down on Business and managed to squeeze in a couple shoots. We scored some great waves and got some awesome photos, be sure to keep and eye out for them in the next African Surf Rider.

Mossel bay has had a great season for waves with light winds and small ground swells, meaning waves pretty much everyday. It was so good that even when i was scoring good waves i was still missing good waves.

Junior Srpingbok coach

Some great news, I have just been informed by Surfing South Africa that I will be joining the the South African junior surfing team to the world games as assistant coach being held in Ecuador.

The Under 18 Boys team is made up of Nick Godfrey of Eastern Province, Shaun Joubert of Southern Cape, Matthew Bromley of Western Province and Dale Staples of Southern Cape. Brendan Gibbens of Western Province is the non traveling reserve.
Joubert and Bromley will both represent South Africa for the fourth time while Godfrey earns a third cap and Staples his second.

Bianca Buitendag of Southern Cape, Sarah Baum of KZN and Tanika Hofmann of Western Province earn their second caps while Kirsty Delport of KZN is the new cap in the Under 18 Girls group. Heidi Palmboom of KZN is the non traveling reserve.

The four surfers who will represent South Africa in the Under 16 Boys division are Michael February and David Brand of Western Province, Dane Staples of Southern Cape and Slade Prestwich of KZN. Steven Sawyer of Eastern Province is the non traveling reserve.

The team will be accompanied by SSA Deputy President Pax Nydoo in his capacity as Team Manager, and the coaching staff will be made up of legendary coach Graham Hynes who is Head Coach, Etienne Venter, the Deputy Coach and Llewellyn Whittaker, the Assistant Coach.

I have the had the privilege to be working closely with 6 of the 15 selected team members which is really exciting and am really looking forward to working with the rest of the team in the coming months in preparation for next year.

Summer is here

Hi Everyone, just a heads up on whats going down on the surfing scene in Mossel Bay. As usual with summer comes small waves which can be a good thing around here as it opens up many other spots in the area.

We have been getting on and off great waves as well as having set up full time on the beach with the learn to surf school. We have a great spot on the grass at Diaz beach with the perfect view of overlooking the beach. The surf school will also be there as extra eyes to make it a safer place to swim and enjoy yourself. So please be sure to come and join us, our lessons are running from 9am-11am and 12pm-2pm, boards will also be available to hire.

The newest edition to the surf school is out stand up paddle board which will also be available for hire and anyone who wants to give it a go.

I also have whizz kid Jayce Robinson from the U.K with me this summer. I had the privilege to work with him as part of the British Junior squad and now he is out here using Mossel Bay as his training ground. Along with Reubin Ash the two of them are by far the hottest junior talent coming out of the U.K at the moment.

With summer holidays just around the corner a lot of preparation is going into the learn to surf school which i will be running at Diaz Beach in Mossel Bay. Waves School of Surfing and Wave Surf Shop has purchased 12 boards from Dean Geraghty, which will be made available for beginner lessons, rentals, my after school club and a few will also be up for sale.

The Soft boards are perfect for learning to surf, buoyant, thick and still very light making them controllable and very safe to use in the water. What is great about the boards is the fact that there is far less chance of getting injured whilst using them, ideal for the whole family.

If you looking for us this summer we will be down on Diaz beach everyday from December 10 to January 10. If your up for a for a fun day on the beach be sure to come and join us, see staff at Waves surf shop or call to make a booking.

Last week I ventured out of the comfort zone of Mossel Bay and headed to Cape Town for an intensive, week long training camp. There was a really good turn out from the Kommetjie crew including the Brand Brothers, Matt Bromo, Brendon Gibbens and the only girl Tanika Hoffman. We got really lucky with the surf and enjoyed two days of 4ft, strong off shore surf. All these kids training and preparing for Springbok trials

The new star to join the Kommetjie group was young up and coming ripper Jordan Maree who is residing in Kalk Bay. The Kid is only 10 years old and already surfing like a champ, showing mountains of talent.

I also had the privilege to work with the Strand duo of Adin Mazencamp, 9 years old and Steff Burrows, 11 years old. Both these two youngsters also showing so much potential and a massive improvement since working with them in August. This is what is so rewarding in my line of work.

Jaco Steyn and Bjorn Larsen were my only two West coast, Melkbos crew. Unfortunately Bjorn had injured his knee so could not attend the lessons although he did come down to show some support to friend and fellow competitor Jaco.

This meant Jaco and I were flexible as to where we could have the lesson. Jaco and I made a last minute decision to go to Elands bay and as luck would have it, we arrived Wednesday morning pleasantly surprised when greeted by fun 2-4 ft, no wind,perfect waves peeling down the point. We surfed Lambert's Bay for lunch and Elands Bay again for dinner then took the long drive home only getting back to the city at 8pm that night.

I got back to Mossel Bay Late on Sunday night and was so happy to see my two girls, Lynette and Kristin. Monday morning I woke up to perfect 3-4ft Outer pool, with not a breath of wind. The tide was pushing and by lunch time were surfing inner pool, still cooking breaking all the way from Fishermans rock with only 4 guys out. So happy to be back home. Go the Bokke!

Tow in Maddness

Howzit guys, almost a month since the last update. Sorry to keep you all waiting for the latest news and photos. Weekend before last the Yamaha gang with Jason Ribbink came down to Mossel Bay to do a demo day for the local surfers and dealership. Shaun Joubert and Michael Shepperd joined us on the beach for what was going to be a good laugh.

It was an awesome sunny day, only two foot at Diaz Beach but for anyone who has been towed behind a ski will know how much fun it is.

The highlight of the session was when Jason and I went out around behind the Point and towed in at a reef that has never been towed before. It was not very big, i would guesstimate in the 3-6 foot range, open ocean swell. Jason was very impressed with the set up so hopefully by next winter we will be all over this reef/slab getting the waves our lives. Will keep you posted on the developments there.

Training camp a success

Hi everyone, i am so proud to inform you that the first of many training camps was an absolute success. During the S.A champs i rounded up 10 of the best surfers in the country including Shaun Joubert, u/18 S.A champ Matt Bromley, U/16 S.A champ Davey Brand his brother Benji brand, u/16 girls S.A champ Bianca Buitendag just to name a few. Jacob Mellish and Tanika Hoffman also attended from Cape Town , Arthur and Vincent Withers as well as Daniel Buitendag also attended the camp.

On the first day we woke up to a beautiful sunrise but very disappointing surf, howling onshore and lumpy. We started the day with a nice run along the the beautiful Bosbokduin beach, we did a dynamic warm up session and played some touch rugby. On the run back we found a lekker big dune which we ran a few times to finish off the morning training session we did about 30 min stretching.

Everyone retired to their castles for breakfast, i had arranged 4 thatch roofed houses in the Bosbokduin nature reserve right on Dolphin point, the perfect setting for such a camp. After breakfast we headed to Still bay main beach where we played some more touch as if we were preparing for the Currie Cup final we topped the session off by playing the life saving game, flags. The idea was to add an element of fun into the rigorous fitness regime.

As the surf was not playing along it was impossible to do heat drills, at this point the kids just wanted to surf. The kids surfed and where filmed after which we went home for late lunch and video analysis. We finished the day just in time to go to the local pub to watch the Currie Cup finals on the big screen. That evening we got together and had a lovely braai fortunately we had an indoor braai as the wind was still very strong.

Day two the onshore was still blowing so we started the day with a very similar warm up and fitness session. After breakfast the sun came out and the wind dropped off to turn out into a perfect day. We were also pleasantly surprised to find a super fun right hander right on our door step, this would be the venue for the mini contest.

The contest went down really well and the on form Shaun Joubert took the win over a hard working absolutley ripping Matt Bromley, Davey Brand finished 3rd and Jacob Mellish 4th. Families hung out on the beach while the kids competed, all in all i believe everyone had a great time. It was a great way for the families to have a weekend away and the kids to learn, it was an awsome weekend which everyone enjoyed. I am really looking forward to holding more of these camps in the future.

the high performance wave of Keramas Bali, Indonesia. From the get go Shaun was clearly out on a mission to win the event with massive heat score all through the event.
The 19-year-old was all class in the barrelling right-handers, weaving through the eye of two reeling tubes to snare a pair of near-perfect 9’s (9.5 & 9.43). After the heat, Joubert said he was pleased to be in Bali.

The duo of Nick Godfrey and Shaun Joubert were flying the flag high with both of them having sterling performances. Both making a name for themselves and South Africa by showing the rest of the world the level of talent we have here on our home soil.

Nick Godo was on fine form and made it all the way to the quarter finals finishing 5th overall. Quintin Jones was also there as Nick's mentor and coach and was able to bare witness to the amazing world class surfing that went down at Karama's.

Shaun Jobert went on another round to the semi finals where he met his match in the talented Marc Lacomare from France and unfortunately bowed out and finished 3rd overall.

The boys are still in Indonesia enjoying a solid ground swell, the event finished a few days earlier which has allowed them to sit back and enjoy some good surf with friends after a there hard work and big effort. Look forward to hearing all about it when you get home Kido.

Other news hot off the press is that Mossel bay charger and all round ripper and nice guy Indy Rookin-Smith has been selected to surf the Springbok trials after an excellent performance at the S.A surfing Championships. The trials will be held in Port Alfred on Saturday 29th of November. Well done and good luck

Reef Wetsuits S.A junior Champs

WOW! What an event. Last week i drove up to Durban 16 hours to go coach the Southern Cape Junior team. The team overall did really well and placed 5th out of 8 which means there is room for improvement. All the kids really did well and for those who did not make the semi or finals they gave it their all and went down fighting.

Stand outs in the Southern Cape Team were Indi Rookin-Smith & Adel Nortjie both from Mossel Bay and both placed equal 5th in the U/18 division. Bianca Buitendag from Victoria Bay won the U/16 division, she not only won but smoked her fellow competitors scoring 17.65 out of a possible 20 the closest was second place Heidi Palmboom with a heat total of 9.00.

Roxy Giles competed in her first ever S.A champs and with pure grit and determination qualified for the finals where she finished 3rd overall.

Other stand outs in the Southern Cape Team were Daniel Buitendag 5th in the U/14, Dylan Reddering from Plet who surfed the bigger conditions with courage and Vincent Withers.

The surf was fantastic the whole event except the first day which was onshore, for the the rest of the event the surf was cooking. It was almost called the Reef Wetsuits big waves S.A junior champs.

Other students that i am currently working with that were also very impressive at the event was of coarse overall S.A u/18 208 junior Champion Matt Bromley. Matt was surfing smooth and polished the entire event to take the win over my main man Brendon Gibbens. Brendon was looking to take the title with some really hard committed surfing, he was a standout at the event and has finally broken his 5th place rut that he has been stuck in. The hard work these kids are putting in finally paying off.

In the U/16 Davey Brand walked away with the win over fellow competitor Jacob Mellish who finished 3rd. Davey was looking hot from the first day and was the man to beat surfing to the criteria, hard fast and tight in the pocket. Jacob has been putting allot of effort into his surfing and his results are proof, he has come along way in the last couple months and can be very proud of his improvement.

Little power house Benji Brand walked away with a win in the u/12 division putting the rest of his competitors to shame by scoring 17.00 out of 20 his nearest threat was the ripper from Cape Town Max Armstrong who placed second with a heat total of 8.75.

Well done to all the competitors i am very impressed with the standard of surfing and am looking forward to seeing these kids grow into mature rippers one day.

After school club

Last week Thursday 25th September we had an amzing day for the after school club, the sun was shinning not much wind and the tide neaps just perfect not to high and not to low. The white waters the kids were catching reformed into small little waves breaking left and right.

Simone, Nickolas and Chad all had some great waves every one was so stoked. It was an ideal situation, my assistant coach Andries was pushing the kids into the waves while i stood waist deep and got some great pictures with my new water proof digital camera.

The after school club runs every Thursday afternoon from 4pm to 5pm at Diaz beach depending on the surf conditions. With summer just around the corner we can look forward some epic conditions and just lots and lots of fun.

After winning the Oakley pro junior in Durban at the beginning of the year Shaun Joubert was given a wild card in the international Oakley pro Junior in Indo. Here are a couple of shot showing Shaun Blowing up and warming up for the event. Shaun has been on fine form of late after winning the Mr price pro Junior in Durban and finishing 3rd at the Billabong in J-bay a couple weeks ago that result qualifying him for the World Junior championships which will be held at Narabeen Australia.

Between school work, contest and the odd sick J-bay swell Shaun has been putting in alot of time in the water and on the beach. He has been training really hard and has been very focus for the event in Indo, with all the effort he has been putting in i am sure a substantial result or even a win will be very achievable. Good luck over there Shauno, fly that flag bru we will be shouting out for you this side in the Baai.

Billabong JNR a success

What a success the 2008 Billabong Junior in Jefferies bay was. It was a well run event with great waves and a fantastic atmosphere. Thursday day was pretty small an inconsistent so the kids had to work hard to advance to the next day.

The swell forecast was looking really positive for Friday first thing was cold and wet and still no sign of any swell, by the time the first heat started swell had started pulling in, perfectly groomed 4 foot sets. The perfect place where some of the best junior surfing went down in both the u/16 and u/20 divisions.Dale Staples lit up the excellent surf at The Point in Jeffreys Bay on Day 2 of the fifth and final event in the 2008 Billabong Junior Series on Friday, posting a near perfect score of 9.25 out of 10 for a deep tube ride. Shaun Joubert was hot on his heels with an outstanding performance both technically and tactically throwing huge fans of spray on every turn. Other stand outs in the U/20 must go to Kacey Grant who has been impressive since i came back on the scene 6 month ago.

The swell held through the day and Saturday morning brought perfect lines into Jefferies bay once again. A slight decrease in swell size, light rain and light variable winds are forecast for Saturday. The provisional schedule shows a full day of action with the Pro Junior Round of 16 followed by the quarterfinals of the U16’s and U14’s before the eight Pro Junior girls take to the water in one-on-one heats competing for an invitation to the Billabong ASP World Junior Championships and the FNB sponsored R12 000 that goes towards the airfare to Australia.

The perfect day was ended off by a big get together and a lekker braai but on by the boys and girls from Billabong. The surf had been great the fires going and cold beer was available for everyone of age what an end to a superb day.

Sunday morning we woke up to clean 2-3 foot surf a slight decrease after the light afternoon onshore from the day before totally contestable. Just as the first heat started so did the onshore and conditions deteriorated through the day making the high scoring rides difficult to find although there were still plenty of waves and sets, to win the event you were going to have to be totally 100% FOCUSED.

Congratulations to all the kids that participated it was an honour to watch all these talented kids surf to their best ability there are just way to many to mention them all by name.

Stand out results came from Jacob Mellish from the Strand winning the U/16, Jacob was on fine form throughout the event and was the man to beat. Davey Brand was surfing amazingly during the entire contest and wave selection let him down to end up 2nd over all, a well deserved result. Both these boys clearly benefiting from all the hard work they have been putting into their sport of choice. J.C de Souza was also looking great with big fans of spray on every turn showing everyone that he will be a force to reckon with in the future.

Shaun Joubert was ripping as usual and was well on his way to winning the event when a choice in his semi final let him down. With 8min to go Shaun went on a wave that was not to improve a score and gave priority to competitor and good friend Dale Stapples who had been a stand out the whole week.

Dale went on to win the Semi final and the event, Congratulation bro you are surfing really well and looking good keep it up.

A big Shout out must go to Klee Strachen and family for the overall Billabong series title. A true example of focus, dedication and hard work.

Bianca Buitendag finished second to Sarah Braum from Durban who also made the finals of the u/16 boys she was looking really good on her back hand out at the point of Jeffiries Bay all week and was definitely the lady to beat. Bianca had had exceptional semi final, woman on woman heat with WQS campaigner Nikita Robb. She took her down with her strong new and improved vertical back had re-entries turning average scoring waves into excellent scoring waves, to qualify for the final.

Fellow Brother Daniel Buitendag in the U/14 with his improved confidence and surfing breezed through his competition to make the final where he came unstuck and finished 3rd over all. He was a stand out in his division with big off the tops done with total commitment earning himself big scores.

In the U/12 Benji Brand finished a consist ant 3rd overall and was definitely once again the man to beat. This kid has been surfing so well for a few years now and it seems he has had a life time in the U/12. This result secured him the overall Billabong series champion, compensations for his disappointing result in the final. Benji was looking confident and polished which showed when he was scoring 8's in his quarter and semi final. Well done Kido.

Other stand outs in this division were Max Armstrong, Jordan Maree and little legends Ethan Fletcher and Aiden Maizemcamp and of coarse the the Wichmans. Its amazing to see the standard of surfing at such a young age, South Africa has a bright future.

All in all a great event for everyone involved parents, judges, coaches. organisers and sponsors.

Out of touch in action

It’s been some time since you last heard from me and waves s’cool’ of surfing. The reason being is that my digital camera went on the blink so I was unable to document the cooking surf and the amazing achievements of the junior rippers in South Africa.

Since then we celebrated my big 30 which was a blast, with it came a sweet little water proof digital camera, what a thoughtful gift. Now we are back on track.

In that time I spent two weeks in Cape Town. I mustered up half the WP team and with that another half dozen of the best surfers from in and around Cape Town ranging in ages from 9 to 18.
It was an intense couple of weeks it was so rewarding to see the marked improvement in each and every individual by the end. It was a pleasure to work with the kids and get to know then on a personal level and all of them were intent on learning.
Whilst in Cape Town I competed in the Cold water classic and made the quarter finals the last day being held at Crayfish Factory. Stand outs of the kids I assisted were Davey Brand and Matt Bromley.

Davey was looking confident and solid throughout the event and achieved a well deserved 2nd in the juniors whilst Matt still a Junior surfed Crayfish Factory like a right hand point break with beautiful arks and turns in the pocket. He was on fire from his first heat and placed 4th overall in the open men. Big shout out must go to Dan Redman for his brilliant win.

Bianca in the meantime was on fine form in Europe competing in some Junior and open WQS events, she competed in three events improving her results in each contest she took part in. Portugal she finished 9th, France she finished 7th and Spain 5th. Congratulation young lady, Big future ahead of you.

The weekend after I got back to Mossel Bay was the Rip Curl Junior. It was an awesome event with some great waves both days were in the 2-4 foot range although Sunday was a little inconsistent. The man on man heats near the end of day 2 suited the surf perfectly. Stand outs at the point where, Davey Brand 1st and Jacob Mellish 2nd in the u/16, Benji Brand the man to beat placed 2nd in the u/14 with Daniel Buitendag with a solid performance 3rd. Sabrina Scott placed 3rd and the most improved Tanika Hoffman finished 1st to win the premier u/16 division.

In between all of that I was fortunate to score J-bay and get some perfect spring Mossel bay perfection. I was also stoked to get a section in a U.K surf film produced by Mr B the leading producer. Eastern Province Surfing Team made history on the final day of the 2008 Reef Wetsuits SA Championships at Victoria Bay Sunday July 27 when they won the Presidents Cup for the first time.Thanks to brilliant performances in their respective finals by their newly crowned SA Men's Champion Shaun Payne and Under 20 Boys champion Nick Godfrey, plus some fine supporting efforts by Men's runner up Simon Fish and Under 20 Girls runner up Faye Zoetmulder.

The final day of competition in the 43rd SA Championships was held in typical 4 - 6 foot Victoria Bay surf that peeled across the bay right up until the last siren. A few rain squalls did nothing to spoil the great vibe created by hosts Southern Cape who made sure that the 200 or so visitors from as far afield as Durban were well looked after.

Southern Cape created a bit of history themselves when the brilliant fourteen year old Bianca Buitendag took the Under 20 Girls title in style to become the youngest surfer ever to win a title in any division at the South African Championships.

Competing in the Under 18 Division, Buitendag came seventh in the recent ISA World Junior Championships in France then won the Mr Price Pro Junior in Durban before coming second in a major Pro Junior event in France just 10 days ago.

During the SA Championships none of her heat scores were under 16 out of a possible 20 points and during the event she scored a 9.50 ride, the highest single wave score in any division. Buitendag’s points in the final were 16.5 giving her an average heat score of 17 and understandably she was awarded the trophy as the Junior Surfer of the Contest.

Nick Godfrey waited until the Final of the Under 20 Boys Division to show what he is capable of and despite the best efforts of local star Shaun Joubert, Godfrey had the edge over the favourite beating him into second spot by 16.5 points to 14.5.

In a thrilling Men's Final the lead changed hands at least four times but in the end it was Shaun Payne who posted 17.40 points in the heat and his EP teammate Simon Fish managed 15.25 to grab the runner-up berth.Southern Cape talisman Llewellyn Whittaker needed one more good wave after his 9.0 point ride to make a charge for the lead but his 13 points were only good enough for third place. Nevertheless his fine performance throughout the event and his huge backhand attack on every wave he rode made him a popular choice as Surfer of the Contest.Matthew Kruger of KZN on 12.75 was fourth.

In winning the Presidents Cup, Eastern Province scored 41560 points to Border's 37954 points while Western Province were third with 34370.Southern KZN scored 33684 to finish fourth, KZN were fifth on 32746, Boland came sixth with 25270 and Southern Cape were seventh on 21794.

Southern Cape with their sterling performance once again would have finished in the top three but it is due to the lack of "Colour" in our team that led to the last place finish as point were deducted because of this. I now want to make a huge call to everyone and anyone out there that is interested in surfing to please contact me. Southern Cape Dominates

Hello everyone, its update time and this is definitely worth a read. After a very successful weekend Bianca Buitendag and Shaun Joubert win the Mr Price Pro Junior in Durban. In tricky, small and shifty conditions both Bianca and Shaun to win the woman's and men's U/20 respectively.

Binaca was very fortunate to advance through her semi final when she had an interference call within the first five minutes. It was through pure guts and determination that she came back to score a magnificent 8.7 ride to still win the heat.

In her final she again cause an interference but stayed focused on what she needed to do and that was to win the final. On her last wave she went to town and score an 8 point ride again proving to her older counter parts that she was and will be a force to reckon with. She took the final amongst stiff competition.

Shaun Joubert was on fine form throughout the competion. In the final he went to town on one wave and scored the only perfect 10 of the contest to become the Mr price pro Champion. Shaun was looking good all through the event and took the win in style with big committed turns. Congratulation kids i am so proud of you. Keep up the good work. Both have been working really hard over the last two months and clearly the win today is their reward.

News flash, news flash, Bianca Butiendag has won the Rip Curl Junior pro Durban. After starting the contest with solid heat scores she went on to win the Rip Curl pro in style. Bianca and myself have been working together for about two months now and since then she has finished 9th at the World Games in France after a stellar performance.

It has been a privilege to work with such a committed, dedicated and enthusiastic, talented young individual. The girl has mountains of talent and is showing maturity beyound her age group, her back hand surfing is also second to non. She has been working really hard over the last two months and already the results are starting to show, Well done Bianca i am so proud of you.

Congratulations and a big shout out must also go to my little champion Benji Brand for winning the u/12 and u/14 division and to his Big brother Davey for placing second in U/16 after winning at the King of the Groms in Mossel Bay the previous weekend.

This week i am off to Durban to coach, Shaun Joubert, Daniele and Bianca Buitendag and the Brand brothers while they are competing at the Mr Price Pro Junior. We will be look at doing well in the event but also mixing the trip up with some hard core training and marketing.

King of the Groms

Hi Guys, sorry for not being in touch just been really busy and don't for one second think we have not been scoring waves cause we have. In fact thank goodness the onshore is here today so we can rest.

WOW, what a weekend for the Quiksilver king of the Groms, Inner Pool, Mossel Bay. The weather was amazing both days with light and variable wind making for ideal contest conditions. Saturday was a little inconsistent but there were still some bomb sets it just meant that you had to be a bit more patient and tactics also came into play.

It was sad to see my young guns Reubin, Arthure, Danile and Vincent fall at the way side not because of ability but simply down to wave selection. I was very proud though to see each and everyone of them try their hardest and give the other competitors a run for their money.

Sunday we woke up to a glorious sunrise,offshore breez, low tide and pushing, with a rising swell how could the kids not be amped to demolish the ever increasing perfect inner pool waves.

Stand out at the event in my eyes were, Klee, Steven Sawyer, Davey and Benji Brand. Big shout out must got to my main man and overall winner of the u/20 King of the Groms, Shaun Joubert. Congratulations my friend on a fine performance.

World Champs

What and exciting end to last month with the Junior world champs help in France. Two of my students Bianca Bruitendag and Shaun Joubert were right there in the thick of things mixing it up with the best Juniors from around the world. Both finished 9th overall with some excellent performances in some heats.

Shaun started the event with a massive heat score of 18 out of twenty in his first heat. Bianca on the other hand had a slow start but was consistently making it through heats and then came the big heat scores. Both Bianca and Shaun surfed impressively throughout the event and certainly turned some heads and gave themselves a solid reputation.

South Africa finished 9th over and 4th overall in the tag team

I am really and truly so proud of my two kids I strongly believe they both have the talent and the focus to win a world title it was just not the 2007 world title. They will both however in the future be winning world titles.

Keep up the good work kids and good luck with the rest of your exams. Enjoy the weekend rest up and study hard,training starts on Monday.

What a beautiful weekend! It does not matter where or when you are in the Cape or South Africa, one just can not ignore the fact that we live in such an amazingly gorgeous country despite the more controversial problems we experience. My good friend Jason Louw and his wife invited us last minute and boy am i glad i did.

This weekend we spent camping on the Breede rivier at a place called River Zicht. No reason for the get away other than to get away and experience life away from the coast. Where we were was very close to Route 62 where all the wine farms are.

This time of the year is a little chili but thank goodness for electric blankets, although we are going into winter, it did mean that it would quite and peaceful. Our bush camp was right on the waters edge which was so amazing waking up to first thing. Sunday morning there was a light mist which added to the already peaceful serenity. Fishing was the highlight of our day although we weren't catching a thing not getting even a bite but we all know it was not about catching the biggest fish. All in all a great weekend with friends family and close ones made for a great weekend that everybody enjoyed.

I love this part of the world so much to see and do.

The Garden Route

Hope all of you had a very good weekend. We were blessed with perfect surf and sunshine here on the Garden Route once again. Woke up Sunday morning to another glorious day the the Bay. Took a drive around the point and from looking at conditions there one can tell if there are going to be waves elsewhere. Conditions were epic, not a breath of wind a small 2m swell running these kind of conditions open the door to many many other unsurfed uncrowded spots.

No one but no one wanted to go on a surf mission so instead i call my girlfriend and in a flash she was ready to go spend the day on the beach. Dog, child, girlfriend, braai, boards and suits packed and off we go. We pulled up to this bank that i found beginning of last week and as expected it was going off the only downer was i would have to surf it by myself. The wave we have been surfing is this sick right hander 3-4 foot shollow sand bar with barrels and long long walls, some people in other parts of the world pay thousands of dollars to surf. Anyway i got the fire going and paddled out just a short surf after a while i came in and the coals were perfect to put the boerawors on the braai.

We all had a nice feed and then the boys started showing up after being relieved of all their Sunday duties. We paddled out for another session and it was great, to share them with some buddies, the conditions stayed epic all day and into early evening. A perfect day which was ended with vetkoek and mince for supper.

New board

Hello to all my readers, how can I not share with you the excitement of getting a new board. When I was in the U.K I was riding for a Welsh shaper named John Purtin, a brilliant shaper and a fantastic guy. JP was shaping me some of the best boards i had ever ridden only due to a good personal relationship with lots of feed back which enabled us to get the boards just perfect. One of my biggest concerns when moving back to South Africa was who was going to shape me my boards. I had been seeing some fantastic boards come out of Graham Smiths factory and thought would give them a try. I guess I am bit more old school where I like to use one shaper and work really closely with him. All my boards I use grip so this morning i put on a sick Ocean & Earth pad, the board is now ready to go, I am just itching to find some surf. If I score some waves later I will let you all know.

Hi guys, got a call today from Anton Joubert, saying my board was ready to be picked up at George airport. So naturally I dropped everything to go grab the board, a brand new Graham Smith,G-force, on the way I picked Jason Van Vuuren up with the intention to surf on the way home. As usual when you least it expect that's when you score. The wind was strong NW, the tide low and pushing the forcast for the swell to pick up. We stoped to check some beach breaks out and this is what we found, three sick waves within a space of a couple hundred meters. There were two right handers and one left, the sand banks just made for epic surf. With only two of us it was a bit nerve recking but the waves were that good that we had to paddle out. We had a couple on the left in front of the car park as it was breaking closest in. Boy i wish i had a crew with me to enjoy these empty perfect waves. Happy day in Mossel bay.

Woke up this morning to another glorious day the Bay. Sun rise was at 7.20am this morning and the sky behind the mountain in the East looked like it was on fire. The wind was a light westerly and the tide was dropping a sweet 2.5m swell running, perfect conditions for the point. Paddled out with two good friends and half an hour later another good friend paddled to join in on the the fun. Imagine perfect 4 foot surf slight offshore barreling on the inside with only four of your best friends in the water hooting each other into waves and watching them get spat out of barrels on the inside section. Its what dream are made of.

Grom Session

I made a trip down to Cape Town for my very good friends wedding, the surf was huge and out of control but the weather absolutely fine, typical Cape Autumn weather. Whilst down in Cape Town I met up with Ethan Fletcher and his good friend and next door neighbour Jordan.I met them at their home in Kommetjie, the two boys bravely though they were going to surf 4-6 foot long beach so it was the coaches decision to move the lesson to Fishhoek where we found a perfect 2/3 foot wave to work with. These two kids are the future of South African surfing and both have the potential to be the best surfers in the world with the right guidance and support. I have worked with Ethan before and at the young age of 8 is showing mountains of potential, it is great meeting with him and watching him grow and mature within his surfing. I met and worked with Jordan for the very first time and am really looking forward to working with him in the future. This kid is also showing heaps of potential and was really focused and attentive in the lesson, its really rewarding seeing these kids with open minds just wanting to learn.

Family Fun Day

Waves S’cool’ of surfing family fun day was an absolute success. The weather was glorious with beautiful sunshine and a light cool breeze perfect Mossel Bay Autumn weather. Families from around the Southern Cape with their excited Kids started arriving early. We had about 100 people show up during the course of the day to enjoy the fantastic weather and waves.

The atmosphere was one of excitement, friendliness and happiness the beach was electric with all that was happening. Some of the kids we had to drag out of the water at the end of the day.
Diaz beach provided perfect waves for the day with a gentle wind and relatively small waves ideal for learning.
Everyone that took part were very grateful for the once in a life time opportunity to stand up and ride a wave. The exuberating feeling that one gets from riding a wave is unique and was enjoyed by people that put a wetsuit on and paddled out to take on the surf.

Everyone that did come to the Family fun day went home very happy and like me very tired and exhausted. After a day in the sun and having that much fun anyone would feel good. Surfing is the ideal way to get together as a family on the beach, to be active, and enjoy a healthy life style.

Due to the success of the Waves S’cool’ Family Fun Day Llewellyn Whittaker in conjunction with Waves surf shop intend to grow and improve the family fun day and will be running many more this year.

Waves S'cool' of surfing has arrived! In conjunction with Michael Sheppard from Waves surf shop, Llewellyn Whittaker has joined forces to bring the first of its kind to the Southern Cape and to the country. A surf school/academy that can cater for every surfer from beginner to elite both young and old, boys and girls. The main focus of the surf school will be to give all aspiring professional surfers the opportunity to get the right training in order to become the best of the best. Any surfer that wants to improve his/her skills will want to be a part of this academy as it will and can only be beneficial to their career. The school is based in Mossel bay which is centrally located on the Garden route. The wide variety of surf will make for excellent training.
